Lead Service Designer

The Scottish Government’s Super Sponsor Scheme is a quick and safe route for displaced people from Ukraine to come to the UK. By acting as ‘Super Sponsor’, rather than waiting for the UK Government’s matching process, Scotland can provide sanctuary immediately, welcoming significant numbers with the right safeguards in place.

Digital and Data services are a key part of that humanitarian response. This includes capturing offers of accommodation and providing tools to help the process of matching displaced people to those offers.

Our multi-disciplinary team are in the midst of delivering applications to help house displaced people from the Ukraine, with a long-term vision to design, build and manage a data platform to build additional applications on.

This role sits in the Scottish Government’s Digital Directorate, working in partnership with the recently formed Ukraine Resettlement Directorate.

Digital (DDaT) Pay Supplement:

This post attracts a £5000 DDAT pay supplement after a 3 months DDaT competency qualifying period. Pay supplements are temporary payments and are subject to regular review.

Service designers design the end-to-end journey of a service. This helps a user complete their goal and government deliver a policy intent. Their work may involve the creation of, or change to, transactions, products and content across both digital and offline channels provided by different parts of government.

A Lead Service Designer is an expert practitioner who influences and mentors others. They work with service managers and programme directors to develop design concepts. They set direction, assure the quality of design delivery across teams and can lead multiple or highly complex services.  Main duties include:

• Coordinate the design of services, strategies, and policies to ensure business requirements and user needs are being met
• Manage relationships and communicate with stakeholders at all levels – influencing, questioning and coaching them
• Advocate for inclusive, collaborative, user centred service design practices and embed them into service design and delivery
• Advise on which service design tools and methods to use
• Champion design for users for whom assisted digital and / or accessibility technologies are required to access a service
• Lead the prototyping and validation proposed design solutions using a variety of prototyping tools
• Make and guide on design decisions and communicate how decisions have been reached
• Mentor, coach and train junior design colleagues and assure that their work meets the required standards

Essential Criteria

1. Experience in a complex environment, leading on service design planning and delivery within an agile development and delivery environment
2. Experience of development and delivery of service design artefacts to support organizations to ‘see the big picture’ and work across boundaries
3. Experience drawing different stakeholders and data sources together to provide evidence and gain agreement for strategic priorities and decisions
4. Excellent organizational, communication and management skills with the ability to manage competing priorities, work to tight deadlines and deliver a high quality service
