Newcastle

Do you have what it takes to rethink and redesign Newcastle’s ‘homelessness system’ to help us end homelessness in the city?

Recruitment during COVID-19 restrictions

During the COVID-19 restrictions, our interviews will be by video call.

Additionally, the successful applicant will be fully supported to work from home for the initial period where restrictions on non-essential travel are in place.

About us

Crisis is the national charity for homeless people. We know that homelessness is not inevitable. We know that together we can end it.

Crisis and Newcastle City Council (NCC) have committed to a formal partnership to work together to end homelessness in the city within 10 years. The partnership commits us to an ambitious place-based programme underpinned by a collective understanding of what causes homelessness in Newcastle, how we currently respond, what works and what we need to do differently to end homelessness in the city over the next 10 years.

About the role

We are recruiting for two Service Designers to join the integrated team being formed in Newcastle as part of the Partnership.

As a Service Designer you will play a key role in bringing about the fundamental system change needed to achieve an end to homelessness in Newcastle. You will gather insights in a creative and an ethical way from a wide variety of people and organisations to build clear recommendations of how services in the city can be improved or developed to meet the needs of residents’ who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

As a member of the integrated team who will deliver this programme of work you will also help to embed a service design approach into the team and across the sector. You will bring real and added value by teaching and coaching new methods and approaches to redesigning the homelessness system, using creativity to bring people along on the journey and enabling many types of stakeholder, including vulnerable groups, to contribute.

You will lead the design and delivery a range of projects, from inception to implementation, that will improve the outcomes and experience of those at risk of homelessness or who are homeless in Newcastle.

About you

To be successful in this role you will be skilled in and comfortable gathering insight to inform the improvement of current services or design of new ones. Your strong understanding and experience of research methods and qualitative analysis techniques means you will help to build a stronger collective understanding of residents’ needs and circumstances.

Your ability to communicate effectively across different audiences is key and you can simplify complex and technical information and language to make it more accessible for non-technical audiences. You will have excellent facilitation skills, and the ability to adapt approaches and topics to different audiences.

You will help build consensus to enable necessary changes in culture and practice, managing what will at times be difficult conversations. You are a creative and solution focused thinker with strong data literacy skills, which mean you are confident capturing and using insight to help inform decision making and make change happen.

Benefits

As a member of the team you will have access to a wide range of employee benefits including:

· Interest free loans to purchase a train season ticket or a bike or for a deposit to secure a tenancy

· Mandatory pension scheme, with an employer contribution of 8.5%

· 25 days’ annual leave which increases with service to 28 days

Alongside our excellent staff benefits, we will support your ongoing development to build your skills, experience and career.
