Fixed Term/Secondment Contract (24 months)

A Market Supplement of £4,282 per annum will be added

We are looking for an experienced, dynamic Service Designer who wants to use their skills and experience to help drive change and innovation at Hackney Council.

You will join our new Change Support Team, which will act as an internal consulting team across the Council, offering new skills, increasing capacity in services over short time frames and building capability and confidence in delivering complex change.

You will be prototyping different service patterns and visualisation to help show how we can deliver different more residents; joining projects ranging from supporting the Council’s response to Coronavirus to how we shape our green spaces to respond to the climate emergency.

You must have an understanding of how to design solutions that are easy-to-use, delivering tangible improvements to a service within known constraints (e.g. legislation, legacy software etc.), a proven ability to generate multiple solutions to a problem, and see prototyping as a team activity, actively soliciting prototypes and testing with others.

You will enjoy working as part of a multi-skilled team using design thinking and Agile techniques to deliver tangible benefits to residents that improve outcomes and reduce cost. You’ll be motivated by a determination to make services better for residents, producing measurable outcomes and coaching people to use new ways of working.

The success of the team will be defined by the degree to which you are perceived to be an integral part of the Council service you work with for each assignment – embedding the confidence to embrace change, not simply ‘doing transformation to’ services. You will also work closely with colleagues in other areas to be part of a community of practice in your discipline.

If you would like to have an informal discussion about the role before applying, please contact Zoe Tyndall, Change Support Team Manager on zoe.tyndall@hackney.gov.uk to arrange a short call.

Hackney ICT is a great place to work! Our team supports vital public services across the borough and is working every day to make things better for our residents and businesses. We are determined to help the ICT and digital profession become more diverse, and we encourage women and other people who are under-represented in technology professions to apply to join our team. You can find out more about our team, how we work and the work we do on our HackIT website.

You can find out more about how Hackney promotes equality and diversity, read about our commitment to being a flexible Timewise employer and read about the fantastic benefits on offer which includes flexible working options, a Local Government Pension Scheme, wide range of training opportunities, working alongside some of the best digital agencies in the country and an employee year-long high street retail discount scheme.

Hackney is one of the UK’s highest performing local authorities, serving one of London’s best places to live and work. We have achieved a huge amount: our services, our schools, our public spaces are all amongst the very best. We have changed the reputation, not just of the Council, but of Hackney itself. Bringing jobs and investment into the borough, securing the legacy from the 2012 Games, and making this a place of which we can all be proud.

When applying, it is essential that you include a supporting statement (no more than two sides of A4), addressing how your skills, knowledge and experience meet all aspects of the post, as indicated in the job description and person specification.

Closing date for applications: 13 July 2020

Interviews: 24 July 2020

We are also working towards our vision, which is to be a place for everyone; where residents and staff can be proud; a place that celebrates diversity and where everyone can feel valued, included and involved. In order to achieve this, we look for people who are: Proud; Ambitious; Pioneering; Open; Proactive; Inclusive.

Hackney Council works to eradicate discrimination on the basis of race, religion, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, pregnancy and maternity, age and marital status. We also recognise that people can be disadvantaged by their social and economic circumstances, so we will also work to eliminate discrimination and disadvantage caused by social class. We also welcome those interested in flexible working. We particularly welcome applications from disabled people, as this group is currently under represented in our workforce.
