As a Service Designer within Corporate Services, you’ll support teams across BEIS to ensure that their service is user-centred. Your role will be to craft accessible services that reduce friction and complexity for both public-facing services and internal systems.

You’ll work collaboratively with colleagues as part of an agile team to solve complex problems with evidence-based digital concepts.

You’ll be experienced in the service design process, understanding how to help teams understand the problem they’re trying to solve, who their users are and translating their needs for your team.

You’ll take a broad approach to service design, incorporating end-to-end and front-to-back thinking as you work with your team to solve the whole problem for the user. You’ll use your problem-solving skills to find opportunities, risks and dependencies across multiple services.

You’ll be an excellent communicator who can advocate for users internally and explain user-centred design principles to non-specialists.

Responsibilities

• Working closely with user researchers to explore to solve the whole problem for the user.

• Actively participating and co-facilitating group workshops, user research and problem-solving activities.

• Applying the GDS Service Manual and Service Standard to deliver excellent public services.

• Working collaboratively with your team and engaging with subject-matter-experts to build end-to-end and front-to-back service blueprints and process maps.

• Selecting and using appropriate design tools and methods to explore opportunities and problems, reducing unnecessary complexity.

• Creating and rapidly iterating prototypes from low-fidelity sketches to high-fidelity prototypes.

• Developing inclusive and accessible design solutions that meet the needs of all users. Applying GDS standards for accessibility and understanding assisted-digital requirements for government services.

• Collaborating with developers, business analysts and other roles within a multidisciplinary team.

• Communicating design decisions effectively to partners from a range of fields.

• Representing service design as a profession to the wider BEIS Digital community. Being an active participant in BEIS digital’s culture through knowledge-sharing and presenting your latest work to the team.

Skills & Experience:

Who you are:

• You’ll have relevant experience in designing services and human-centred experiences.

• You’ll have some experience of working in agile, including an awareness of agile tools and how to use them.

• You know how to work collaboratively within a group, actively networking with others and sharing constructive feedback as a team.

• You listen to the requirements of technical and business partners and interpret them in a way that is clear for both audiences.

• You can work autonomously as needed, managing your own time and priorities.

• You are responsive to changes in technology, adapting your approach accordingly.

• You approach prototyping as a team activity, actively designing and testing prototypes with others. You can establish design patterns and iterate them. You can use a variety of prototyping methods and choose the most appropriate ones.

• You can collaborate with user researchers and can represent users to partners. You understand the difference between user needs and the desires of the user.

• You understand accessibility requirements and standard methodologies. You can champion user research to focus on all users.

• You can collate complex, sometimes conflicting user needs and insights to make informed design decisions that are evidence-based.

• You are comfortable with making difficult decisions and are confident in presenting your findings and recommendations to partners.
