Service Designer

As a Service Designer you can make your own powerful contribution to our brand new Digital & Innovation Service. Bringing a relentless focus on delivering the right outcomes for our users, you’ll be part of a team of Service Designers within our UX function. As we embrace whole new ways of working, you’ll help us drive real change to the digital landscape and the culture of Westminster City Council.
You’ll be at the heart of an ambitious programme which stems from an important realisation: that we can best address the challenges and opportunities facing residents, businesses, visitors and workers across Westminster by embracing innovation, technology, and partnerships. The programme brings an inclusive, user-centred, participatory and problem-led approach to delivering quality services and world-leading experiences for everyone we serve.
Taking ownership of the prototyping of services and interactions, you’ll help diverse service areas to understand the possibilities of transformation and see how to turn prototypes into services. Working across the whole of our Digital & Innovation portfolio, you’ll support core IT, technology, customer, digital and Smart City aspects. We’ll look to you to use different prototyping methods for different needs – on paper, in static code and in conversation.
This is a role with variety at its heart. You might find yourself working in a product team, iterating a product to continuously improve. Or you might be mapping business flows, specifying and designing end-to-end services. You’ll work with senior leaders to determine service opportunities and specify effective business solutions, and you’ll inspire service areas to be more ambitious about processes.
Along the way, you’ll work with talented colleagues in User Research, Service Design, User Experience Design, Online and Digital Transformation, and Customer Service. Together, you’ll help Westminster become The Digital Local Authority. And ultimately, you’ll help us deliver better outcomes for the people of Westminster.

About You:
You demonstrate understanding of service design principles, practices and methods, and of product development methodology, frameworks and principles. Knowledge of modern technology, including cloud technology, architecture, agile delivery methods and software practices, is vital. You’re also familiar with user research principles and benefits, data and evidence-driven decision making, systems thinking and the cross-government DDAT framework.
You’ll bring to the role proven experience working in multidisciplinary teams to design and build services and improve existing service delivery. This has seen you deliver prototype interactions against time constraints to help unlock creative thinking in a team. Your skills in influencing, persuasion and communication equip you to guide design decisions, help stakeholders see opportunities, and take the lead on process change.
