Job summary
HMRC is currently undertaking some of the largest digital transformation programmes across Government and other sectors. Our designers are at the core of keeping user needs central to design and implementation, providing an opportunity to shape and improve services that impact millions of users daily.
The UK Single Trade Window (STW) programme delivers a single digital portal, which simplifies traders’ interactions with the border. The programme provides a unique opportunity to deliver the UK’s first STW.
STW is a key enabler to the 2025 UK Border Strategy, which sets out a vision for the UK border to be the most effective in the world. The STW will bring direct benefits to traders and enhance the UK’s reputation on the global stage. This is an exciting cross-government piece of delivery, requiring collaboration across a wide range of departments.
We are looking for an individual who is proactive in their approach to work and has sound judgement, with strong ability to communicate and prioritise.

Job description
We are looking to recruit one Senior Service Designer to work on The Single Trade Window Programme. This is a high-profile and stretching role, offering the successful candidate the opportunity to broaden their experience and develop their skills in a fast-paced environment.
In this role you will assure the work of our Technical Delivery Partner who is designing and building the Single Trade Window.
You will;
- hHlp ensure users can complete their goals and that government delivers its strategic and policy intent. Your assurance work will cover the creation of, or change to, transactions, products and content across both digital and offline channels provided by different parts of government.
- Share your experience on designing the end-to-end journey of our services and products for our users, demonstrating your role when tricky problems arise and thinking broadly about how services and policies interact.
- Help the TDP to develop design concepts, collaborate with product and business analysis leads, help set direction and embed good practice within teams and make important decisions based on research and understand how this research impacts others.
- Work in a group of UCD professionals and alongside policy, product, and process owners to ensure that the features that are being designed are informed by evidence and put our users first.
- Work closely with each other to ensure the full end-to-end picture is joined up, and you will manage and develop the capability of more junior UCD professionals.
