Your new role

As the Lead Service Designer in the team your role is help DVSA deliver and continuously improve joined up, end-to-end services based on data and evidence. You will provide leadership to the service design profession including developing standards and ways of working, and advocate for the inclusive design and research.

You will work with policy experts and wider team to scope, deliver and evaluate research across DVSA services. You will work with colleagues from other government departments and agencies to help develop DVSA services and develop the service design profession at DVSA.

Responsibilities include:

  • Advise and challenge Service and Product owners to develop design plans aligned to the strategic and policy intent of DVSA services
  • Lead colleagues to carry out a wide range of service design activities from problem framing, journey mapping, prototyping and workshop facilitation
  • Evaluate the impact of service design activities
  • Assess services to ensure they meet the Service Standard
  • Collaborate with and advise the Directorate and department leadership teams, and other profession leads to establish and develop the profession leadership model for DVSA
  • Set standards for service design quality, output and impact
  • Establishing consistent ways of working for Service Designers at DVSA
  • Mentoring, managing and guiding Service Designers to assure and improve design practices
  • Plan and allocate Service Designers appropriately across services, hiring new talent and upskilling where necessary
  • Evaluate the maturity of Service Design at DVSA and recommend steps to develop our practices further
  • Contributing to the wider cross-government Service Design community including presenting at meetups and writing blog posts
  • Support the ongoing development of the DVSA Accessibility Working Group.

What you will need to succeed

  • Proven ability to understand the complex problems a service team is trying to solve, and align design activities to inform decision making and action.
  • Demonstrable ability to facilitate design workshops with multidisciplinary teams and senior stakeholders which lead to actionable outcomes.
  • Able to translate actionable insights from user research and other insight sources into accessible designs.
  • Experience of mentoring and upskilling junior designers and fostering communities of practice.
