Bechtel is seeking a CSA Lead Designer for mining and metals equipment, based in Chile. This position will be responsible for assigned activities within an engineering or design discipline in a global business unit. He applies extensive knowledge of engineering principles and practices to project engineering in preparing designs and deliverables. He makes decisions about discipline problems on the project. He represents the discipline in the project and before the client to resolve technical issues.

Principal functions

As CSA Lead Designer, you will be primarily responsible for:

  • Plan, develop, coordinate, and review design work within a medium-sized discipline workgroup on medium-sized projects or assignments in support of a global business unit.
  • Coordinate and interact, as directed, with the daily technical work of engineers, scientists, specialists, and designers of disciplines.
  • Communicate complex technical issues and recommend solutions to senior management.
  • Facilitate technical discussions with third parties (client, suppliers, regulators).
  • Prepare or oversee the preparation of estimates and disciplinary work plans in accordance with project scope, schedule, and budget, and manage execution and performance accordingly.
  • Develop Engineering Department Procedures (EDPs), Bechtel Design Guides, appropriate Bechtel Standards Computer Applications (BSAPs), and administrative practices.
  • Coordinate with customer representatives, as delegated, to obtain approval of work phases.
  • Review and approve key engineering drawings and calculations and bid summaries.
  • Coordinate assigned design work with other project groups.
  • Provide mentoring and support to designers and editors, facilitating the necessary on-the-job training for their professional development.
  • Promote the creation of a work environment, supported by leadership, which encourages openness, trust, communication, teamwork, training, innovation and satisfaction.

what we expect from you

For the CSA Lead Designer position, we expect you to have experience and knowledge of:

Basic Qualifications (Requirements)

Degree in an engineering or scientific discipline, awarded by an accredited university, OR a professional license in an appropriate engineering or scientific discipline, awarded by a recognized licensing board, OR specialized courses in relevant general design or an appropriate engineering discipline, together with extensive progressive work experience in design or other relevant types of engineering; such as system commissioning, field engineering or plant operation in large industrial plants, utilities, process plants or engineering/construction companies.

Additional qualifications (desirable)

  • Knowledge of systems, equipment, applications of design methods, materials, and computers for analysis preparation and development of project design deliverables within the discipline.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the technical and cost issues related to the selection of design features within the discipline.
  • Good working knowledge of the application of 2D and 3D CAD tools, S3D platform and Tekla in the development of conceptual designs and production design deliverables of some complexity.
  • Knowledge of the methods of planning and control of engineering work.
  • Knowledge of precedents in the discipline and of the principles and practices of related disciplines.
  • Extensive knowledge of industry and regulatory codes and standards, and design criteria and/or provisions relevant to the discipline.
  • Good knowledge of Engineering Department Procedures (EDP), Bechtel design guides, appropriate Bechtel Standard Computer Applications (BSAP) and administrative practices.

Applies broad knowledge of engineering principles and practices to project engineering in the preparation of designs and deliverables. Makes decisions concerning problems within the discipline on the project. Represents the discipline on the project and with the client as directed to resolve technical questions.

Essential Job Functions

As Lead CSA Designer, you will be primarily responsible for:

  • Plans, develops, coordinates, and reviews design work within a medium-size discipline workgroup on projects of medium size or assignments in support of a global business unit.
  • Coordinates and interfaces as directed with the day-to-day technical work of discipline engineers, scientists, specialists, designers, and drafters.
  • Communicates complex technical issues and recommends solutions to upper management.
  • Facilitates technical discussions with third parties (client, suppliers, regulators).
  • Prepares or oversees the preparation of discipline estimates and work plans in accordance with project scope, schedule, and budget, and manages implementation and performance accordingly.
  • Develops Engineering Department Procedures (EDPs), Bechtel design guides, appropriate Bechtel Standard Computer Applications (BSAPs), and administrative practices.
  • Coordinates with client representatives as delegated to obtain approval on phases of work.
  • Reviews and approves key engineering drawings and calculations and bid summaries.
  • Coordinates assigned design work with other project groups.
  • Mentors designers and drafters by providing appropriate on-the-job training for their professional development.
  • Promotes the creation of a work environment, supported by leadership, which fosters openness, trust, communication, teamwork, empowerment, innovation, and satisfaction.

Job Knowledge and Experience

The Lead CSA Designer is expected to have knowledge and/or experience in:

Basic Qualifications (Required)

  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering or scientific discipline, from an accredited college or university, OR a professional license in an appropriate engineering or scientific discipline, from a recognized licensing board, OR specialized courses in relevant general design or an appropriate engineering discipline, AND broad progressive work experience in design or other relevant types of engineering such as systems startup, field engineering or plant operation in large industrial plants, utilities, process plants, or engineering/ construction firms.

Additional Qualifications (Preferred)

  • Knowledge of systems, equipment, applications of design methods, materials, and computers for preparation of analyses and development of project design deliverables within the discipline.
  • Knowledge and understanding of technical and cost issues related to the selection of design features within the discipline.
  • Good working knowledge of the application of 2-D and 3-D CAD tools, S3D platform and Tekla in the development of conceptual designs and production design deliverables of some complexity.
  • Knowledge of engineering work planning and control methods.
  • Knowledge of precedents in the discipline and of principles and practices of related disciplines.Knowledge of related construction practices and the economics involved.
  • Broad knowledge of industry/regulatory codes and standards, and design and/or layout criteria pertinent to the discipline.
  • Good knowledge of Engineering Department Procedures (EDPs), Bechtel design guides, appropriate Bechtel Standard Computer Applications (BSAPs) and administrative practices.
